Maintaining your fence is just as important as taking care of any other part of your home. Remember, this barrier is the first thing that defines your property. Without it, people would not know where your compound starts or ends. Therefore, the first reason why you should maintain your fence is to increase your level of security. Remember, potential intruders love a weak fence. You would never know which part of it is fragile unless you take care of it regularly.
For example, you will see every inch of your fence if you paint it. That means you see any vulnerable areas and then fix them. More importantly, painting it improves the aesthetic appeal of your home. People would feel as though your house is tidy if your fence has the same quality. Finally, painting it helps it to withstand adverse weather conditions.
– When Should You Paint The Fence?
Painting a wooden fence is not as easy as many people seem to think it is because you have to consider many things if you want to do it properly. For instance, the season in which you paint it matters. You should do it in the summer when the possibility of rain is low.
The time of day also matters. You should wait until a shade covers the fence before you start painting it. The paint on the wood will dry quickly if the heat from the sun makes the fence hot. Drying too fast means the paint will start peeling sooner than you expect it to peel. Moreover, it cannot protect the wood from outside elements successfully if it does not soak into the fence properly.
Lastly, the daytime temperature matters as well. The paint will not dry properly if you paint the fence when the temperature is below 5 degrees Celsius. It cannot protect the wood from adverse conditions if the drying process is ineffective.
– How Should You Prepare Your Fence?
Preparation for this type of work involves two primary steps i.e. preparing your fence and protecting items near or around it. In the first step, you need to clean it thoroughly. That means using a fence cleaner to remove all forms of organic matter on it including algae, fungi, moss, or lichen. Then you should get rid of old screws and nails sticking out of it. Finally, sand down rough areas on it and remove any splinters sticking out of it. Then you should move to the second step of preparation i.e. protecting any valuable items near your fence. You can do that by covering plants with plastic sheeting so that paint does not fall on them. You should also move garden furniture out of the way so that you do not splash them with paint as you go about painting your fence.
– How Should You Apply The Paint On The Fence?
Divide your fence into various sections. Each part between two posts should be a single section. Work each section at a time so that you can be efficient. Mask off all the areas you do not want to paint with dustsheets. Then stir the paint before you use it. Start with the top edge of the fence and then work your way down. Always paint in the direction of the wood grain. Allow it to dry and then add a second coat if necessary. Finally, remove the dustsheets and your work is complete.
Sometimes, your fence can be quite large. It may be tiresome if you decide to paint it by hand. In this case, you should use a sprayer because it will help you do a great amount of work in a short time. What you need to do is to pour the special paint into the tank sprayer. Turn it on and then create some distance between you and the fence. Squeeze the trigger of the sprayer and it will paint the wood for you as long as you point it in the right direction. Start from the top and then work your way down. You should remember that spraying is only suitable on a day that is not windy. The spray will cover you or other items near your fence if you do it on a windy day.
